MCI Counseling Marines Practice Test

The chosen answer highlights a significant drawback of the directive counseling approach, which is the tendency to concentrate on symptoms rather than uncovering and addressing the underlying causes of those symptoms. Directive counseling often involves the counselor taking control of the discussion and leading the subordinate towards a specific solution. While this can be beneficial in some scenarios, it can lead to a superficial understanding of the issues at hand, as the focus may remain on immediate problems rather than exploring deeper, systemic factors that contribute to those problems.

This limitation can prevent effective resolution and understanding, as it may encourage a cycle of superficial fixes instead of fostering long-term development or change in behavior and thinking patterns. Recognizing this, counselors trained in directive approaches must balance their tendency to lead with the need to dig deeper to understand the root causes of issues faced by their subordinates.
